Public Works
The Public Works Department is a very diverse organization providing installation, repair, and maintenance of water, sewer, streets, storm water drainage, public buildings, parks, cemetery, and the collection of solid waste and yard debris.
Vernon M. Edwards was the eighth of eleven children born on January 20, 1958 at his parents’, Willie McCoy Edwards and Nettie Johnson Edwards, home in Craven County.
Vernon graduated in 1976 from West Craven High School. He began working for the Town of Vanceboro in 1977 as a Laborer. He made a steady climb up the ladder of success by obtaining his water operators license in 1979 and then his wastewater operators license in 1982. In 1994 Vernon became the Town of Vanceboro’s Public Works Director.
Vernon has 35 years of creditable service with the Town of Vanceboro and supervises five (5) employees. He oversees all operation, installation, repairs and maintenance of water, sewer, streets, storm water drainage, public buildings, parks, cemetery, and the collection of solid waste and yard debris.
Vernon married Shelia Cox of Cove City. They have five children. In his spare time, Vernon enjoys spending time with his family, lawn care, and fast cars.
